Tripwire 1 #1 Posted April 15, 2020 Need to set the timing on a 8hp Briggs model 190434-0825. Bearing didn’t come along with the case, can I use a gear/ bearing puller to remove this crank bearing to see timing mark on crank gear?
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,484 #2 Posted April 15, 2020 Curious what this 190434-0825 engine came from. Toro lists one application and a service bulletin lists another. I can't answer your question but here is the service manual from Briggs. If you click on the fuzzy pictures below it will take you to a folder that has notes on the files. Another we have with the operator manual and parts list. Garry
lynnmor 7,819 #4 Posted April 15, 2020 You are right to be concerned with using a puller on a ball bearing. If you pull hard on the outer race, all that energy will be transferred thru the balls at their contact point. Check if a new bearing is available before doing possible damage. I would first try squeezing a rag behind the bearing, than hold up the engine by the rag while tapping the crank end with a soft hammer.
squonk 43,825 #5 Posted April 15, 2020 You can get a bearing separator from Harbor Freight. Install it behind the bearing so it pulls on the inner race. Use the puller to pull on the separator. Warm up the inner race a bit and it should come right off
