TC10284 113 #1 Posted April 4, 2020 Have a 312-8 that I am working on. Can't tell the model because it has rubbed off. It has one of the older Kohler 12HP engines. I can get this one to run, but ONLY if connect the black/pink wire going to the fuse onto the LEFT terminal and not the RIGHT terminal. However, the voltmeter doesn't work, and the PTO safety switch doesn't work (I can have the deck engaged while turning over engine). The PTO safety switch isn't that big of a deal to me, but I would like the voltmeter to work. https://photos.app.goo.gl/ZPymmiueohuQFj4AA
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,393 #2 Posted April 5, 2020 Will guess your tractor is a 1986 model. There were 2 models numbers in 1986 with the difference being the differential carrier bearings in the transmission. See if this wiring looks like a match. Wires with a color stripe are considered the color of the stripe. Your ID decal is in front of the seat as 1985 and 1986 models were. In 1987 the decal moved to the left side of the seat. Looks like the first 2 digits in the Kohler serial number are 16 = 1986 Kohler production which would have landed on a 1986 or 1987 model tractor. 1986 models have battery ignition and 3 amp unregulated charging system - the lights only work with the engine running. First year for low oil switch Click on the picture Let us know what you figure out. Garry
TC10284 113 #3 Posted April 17, 2020 OK, an update to this: I didn't figure out the safety switches, but I did get it to run successfully. So I am going to leave it like this. My voltmeter must be bad, because I tested it with a multimeter and am getting appropriate voltage on the wires at the voltmeter.
