Aldon 4,828 #27 Posted April 3, 2020 If keeping both isn’t an option, it would depend on my stockpile of onan parts. its the more collectible of the two. The more valuable of the two and HP rules. I’d go 520-8 if I were you. however, I won’t ever get rid of my 160-8
Cvans 1,009 #28 Posted April 3, 2020 Just thinking about having to make that decision gives me a headache. Your going to have to make the choice. The Onan is a little scary though.
Bill D 2,281 #29 Posted April 3, 2020 Keep them both. I don't know your age but I would rather have the electric lift as I get older. Put one on my dad's 312-8 and he loves it. Even if the Onan blows, it could be repowered with a Briggs Vanguard engine kit from Small Engine Warehouse.
Pullstart 67,079 #30 Posted April 3, 2020 I understand that everyone has their own situation... I’d say keep ‘em both too... but that 8 speed 520 is a unicorn in my book. I’m much more keen on the order stuff, but keep that unicorn in the barn!
chip61 666 #31 Posted April 3, 2020 I say keep both! But, as mentioned the 520 has electric lift and you've already addressed the wiring and it's not a machine you come across very often so as much as I like the 16 horse Kohler I would have to keep the 520 in this case. (both beautiful machines)
richmondred01 2,307 #32 Posted April 3, 2020 (edited) I rebuild Kohlers so I’m a big fan of the old flatheads and have NOS Kohler parts everywhere. Over the years I’ve rebuilt several dozen of the onan performer series and while I like them the onan parts are extremely high dollar and I’ve sold off the vast majority of my NOS onan parts. The p220 on the 520 has been torn down inspected and parts replaced with new onan parts. At my age, and given that they have both been taken down to the frame and rebuilt, either one will last my lifetime. I put maybe 12 hours a year on each one every year. The c-160 does more the what I need to do so I’m leaning to selling “unicorn” 520-8. I was going to bring both to the big show this year and which ever one sold first I would take the other back with me or sell both and keep old reliable.
