Tiller fixup has begun

Several Day‘s ago i reworked my tiller, to use it on my Horse on the rear.

The first row i tilled was a great Success, but in middle of the Second row i heard a loud „ploink“ sound and the Tiller stops moving.

 

 

I see a bigger Rock under the soil, that ain‘t easy to remove, but i’m sure it causes the Damage.

I guessed the chain maybe is riped, because the big pulley moves easily and the hackstars can be rotated, but had a slightly scratching noise,

like a chain jumps over a sprocket.

 

To clear now finally i disassembled the whole Tiller to find out what‘s happen, my biggest fight until now was to pull the Hackstars,

they aren‘t willing to remove.

They be rusted for eternity, but i wan‘t destroy them.

i try Heat, but they still stay‘s where they are, even the Lockbolt, couldn‘t be moved or removed.

 

 

to go ahead, i drill out the Lockbolts to release the hackstars in hope on removing but -

 

 

 

nothing, the Hackstars still stay.

I decide this are Anti Christ and i must deal with the given situation.

So i cleaned the whole Case from Soil and dirt and opened the Chaincase.

 

 

My thoughts are confirmed, the Chain is riped.

ok, that could be fixed hopefully simple, pullout the chain and clean it..

 

 

The Chain is well greased and in a real good shape, measuring shows there is not much Wear on.

Even the sprockets are in good shape, so just order a Chainlock and i’m good to go.

 

 

That must be a brutforce, not the Belt was damaged, no - the Chain rips...

 

 

Hard to believe, but Now i‘m sure i just need a Chainlock to fix that 👍

When you get the tiller back together don't put the lock pins back in, till with it without them in. I had the same problem with a troy built tiller. Took some time but they came free. I cleaned up the shafts and used never seize. I would loosen up the belt a little, better to spin the belt when you get into rocks or hard ground.

That‘s a good idea, if it reworked, i‘ll give it a Try.👍

 

 

i learned the lesson about the Belt spaning, i ordered also a centrifugal clutch Additionally.

So if i hit a Rock, i hope this will save the chain Gear,

maybe i loosing a bit of Force but if it works, it ain‘t stall immediately.

in this case i have a bit more time to reacting.

I try that in mass but nothing, even with blowtorch and brakefluid in combination, but i hesitated a bit about the Bearings.

Use roughly a hammer, just a carefully (sensefully) use with a pullhammer was tried and few other things i have, 

it was even unable to twist it even with two 3“ pliers, so i decide to rework it allready mounted.

 

The hackstars seems to be Welded, but they ain‘t.

They had a bit over 20Years time to rust inside - bad maintenance from PO.

 

maybe with both hackstars screwed with chains pulled in oposite direction with a hydraulic press will do the Trick,

but i haven‘t.

 

but i have even with the hackstars mounted enough space to insert a Chainlock.👍

Darb1964 suggests that you leave the lock pins out after you repair the chain.  Hopefully, the torque and vibration from use will break the hackstars loose on the shaft. Application of penetrating oil to the hackstar hubs should accelerate this prices.

I had pipe wrenches on that troy built, it would not move. Instead of breaking something, took me years and $ replacing broken parts to figure that out.. I let the machine do the work, one side freed up quick, the other took a while. Let my neighbor use it on his garden, forgot to tell him that might happen. He was upset thought he broke something,  he was relieved when I showed him.

Today i cleaned the Chainbox as good as possible.

I started with a pot of Diesel, to degrease as much as possible,

to prevent any of the cracked parts will be kept in that old Grease and destroy the new Chain.

 

 

 

 

i have to be really carefully, not to destroy the Gasket.

They are no longer available.

 

The Day before i cleaned the old Chain in a pot of cooking oil, to clean it and remove old grease.

i would like to see how the Status of the Chain really is.

 

After putting in the cooling Pot, i see a non usable result.

 

 

There are several cracks, that was my „go“ to order a complete new Chain for the Tiller.

 

The Sprockets itself seens pretty good in condition, even after removing the old Grease.

 

 

An item in between was a planed „new“ centrifugal Clutch,

what shall protect in Future the Chain - i hope - if it stally on a Rock.

 

 

a today „testrun“ shows a well function, i can be in idle being hold simply by a Fingertip without any Force.

if Throttle is bit more as half it engages. 

 

that seems a well usable solution.

 

 

Today arrives the 3 ordered Chainlocks, but the ordered Chain is still on the Way.

Today a e-mail arrived, the chain can not be delivered because of Corona.

 

i like to prepare my Field, huh so just to wait for things they come maybe in few months is no option.

So i decide i break the chain and exchange the worsest chain liks with chainlocks.

 

i have 5 chainlock and 4 extremly worn or broken links, that sounds a Plan.

I reinvestigate the worsest chainlinks and exchanged them to a hopefully useful chain.

 

Than i cleaned the Greasfitting and pregrease it

 

a new Seal was urgently required.

after that i inserted the reworked Chain and see if it rips somewhere, but it runs smoothly.

i doubt about the side slope, but i hope it will work for a Day

 

Than i closed the Chainbox and reinserted all Screws.

 

 

Another test shows, it shall be fine so far, ok, let‘s do it, if it doesn’t work, i can change the chain later maybe.

 

 

it looked good so far but than i decide to increase the width, with the 2 addon hackstars i have in spare.

 

 

so i simply decide to weld them on, to increase the useful width.

i know, there is much more force on the hackstars, but i hope it‘s enough, that it breaks the hastar from the Axle.

Whilst welding, i insert a Screw, to have better conduction, it will be removed wile working.

 

ok, the Protection cover is now too small, but i will increase it later, if i know if it works or not.

 

 

Than i decide to resharpen all the Blades, to dig easier into soil.

 

later i bring the Reworked tiller with new Belt in the Front of the Horse.

i decide to remount it again in the front, to have it visible, hoped to can faster reacting if anything goes wrong.

 

So i drilled 2 Holes into FEL and mount it fix on there,  instead of the tyres.

  

This link will be capturing the Tiller onto the FEL better than rubberband Straps

 

I just have to rework the tilt cylinder, that it fits as tilt lever.

 

after that, i do a try if and how it now works.

 

 

 

 

 

 

it works better than i expected, but the Hackstars still stay‘s on, let‘s see how long.. 😎

i‘m satisfied and see it for the moment as fixed.

 

Whenever the new chain arrives, i had one in spare...👍

Huh, mainly no,

but i will do it several times, to loosen up the soil once and dig later some compost under.

 

Next i will plow again, fill up the plowrows with composted soil and rework it with the tiller into.👍

Can you easily switch back and forth from using tiller to using front end loader?

i did all my planing and reworking so, that i be simply able to change thing for the use as needed.

 

Actually i had the Steelbucket mounted on the bigger FEL, but i have other options in plan.. 😎

It happens as i feared, another Chainrip today.

 

Ok, the good side is, i was able to dig few times the Field, to loosening the Soil as good as possible.

It worked for 4 Passes and i was able to digged in 28 cm deep including 2 times mix some humus under Soil.

each pass i digged it loosened the Soil more and more and mic the humus into, but i take care of the Chain not to onverload.

While tilling a lot of hidden bigger stones come up and i removed them.

 

It was a good decision to put the Tiller on the front of the FEL, because it just works with its own weight.

and i was able to tilt the Tiller to its maximum usability.

 

On the last try mixing pass i hear at the end of Work a well known rattling noise and the Centrifugal clutch stops immediately movement.

So far that has being worked until i finished. 👍

 

Ok, so searching again for a new chain - however.

 

Than i do some Seattime on the Beast an Plowed two rows to insert Potatoes and Garlic between.

au least i drove few passes, to have an direction, where i planted.

 

 

 

 

Now some coffeebreak, that i will have a ride into Forrest.

Get a delivery today surprise surprise, 

look what i get - 

 

I call yesterday a local hardware Store, if they can order a 3/8“ Chain, they answered yes,

The guy told me maybe they can send it tomorrow, but while i told them i‘m just few hundrets meter far,

he brought it today.

Whow cool Service, even much cheaper than my preordered at internet.

Cool, so here i go again 

 

ok first i rethinkin how i could remove the Hackstars,

think i develop a good idea, let work the Hydraulic for me.

More as 8To. pulling force shall be enough to remove the Hackstars.

 

so i tried it 

 

 

 

Started the Beast and mount two chains short in the Hackstarmounts.

than i pulled the Lever to lift the FEL.

 

ploink, another chainrip... 🤪 that Star is definitely rusted for eternity.

 

ok, so i must do it again the same Way..

 

disassemble all parts than insert the new Chain.

 

 

but i found when i hold the Axles aligned, there is a huge sloopy on the Chain, even in the new.

 

 

i think maybe a simple chain spanner will reduce the cause of future troubles.

 

so i drilled a hole and build one myself.

 

 

looks much better now.

i cuttet a Screw with the Flex and welded it onto a pipeclamp.

the spring force shall be good enough to work as chainspanner.

 

could be easy handled from outside the Gearbox

 

Simple with a Screwdriver and a 13mm wrench.

 

     

 

so realign the Belt aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand ————— here we go !

 

Let‘s see if all works...

 

 

At least i started to build the new protection Covers.

 

that‘s it for the moment, to be continued...

Finished today the Tiller protection cover.

 

i used 1mm thick Aluminum i had from the old roof from the Beast and cut it with a manual hand siccors in shape.

 

 

 

After cutting, i bended the edges a bit more to have a better Clearance.

 

After that i decided to give the Thing a nicer look and painted it with a Rattlecan i had in spare for the Horse.

 

 

 

 

I find if both working together, they shall also look similar.

 

Still thinkering, if i shall paint the Fueltank also in the same Red Color.
