Model 51 0 #1 Posted April 28, 2009 I have a GT-14 thats in good shape but now it wont start. Basically when I turn the key the starter selenoid clicks but it wont turn over. Not knowing much about electrical systems I replaced the starter selenoid. Same thing......click, click. I do know that before it started doing this if I left the negative battery cable attached to the battery the tractor would drain the battery dry even when its shut off. Kinda like leaving the lights on after you shut the tractor down............Dead battery......... I am thinking maybe its the ignition coil, ignition switch, bad wiring,,,,,,,,,,, any suggestions? Thanks, Chris down in Georgia.
hodge 6 #2 Posted April 28, 2009 If you have repeatedly drained the battery down, I would suspect that first. Put a charger on it, especially one with a start assist, and see if it turns over.
Model 51 0 #3 Posted April 29, 2009 Battery is good. .............Seems like it cant gather enuff juice to turn over....... ignition coil?
WHC-125 4 #4 Posted April 29, 2009 Try cleaning the terminals off of the key switch and battery with sandpaper and WD-40.
bo dawg 517 #5 Posted April 29, 2009 just a thought, if the battery is good and charged and has good conections, could it be the starter draging or seizing up
Model 51 0 #6 Posted May 3, 2009 Are starters still available for Kohler 14 hp of 1972 vintage?
bo dawg 517 #7 Posted May 3, 2009 I'm not sure but you can go to a Toro dealer and see if available, their $$$. You can find used ones on ebay often or Craiges list.
clintonnut 126 #8 Posted May 3, 2009 Yea, There are some new starters up on ebay all the time. The K241, K301, K321, K341 all use the same starters. You can get a high torque one on ebay for $90 Charlie
evanloock 236 #9 Posted May 3, 2009 If your problem is in fact the starter, which it very well may NOT be...............You won't find a new starter of the same quality as the American Bosch starter currently on your K-321. The brushes were worn on my starter and it would not engage at all. I took it to a starter repair shop and had new brushes put in and general service performed on the starter for less than $50. The brushes for your starter are NLA from Kohler, but any good starter repair shop can match them up or make a set.
oldandred 15 #10 Posted May 3, 2009 By chance have you tryed turning the engine over by hand just to make sure its not locked up ?? stupid guestion but just checking
Model 51 0 #11 Posted May 4, 2009 Yep, it turns over by hand. I did notice that the starter is warm to the touch and not engaging at all. I pulled it and am going to see if it (the starter) will turn over on the bench............ after that ............well see.

Have you tried tapping the solenoid with a rubber mallet or a piece piece of wood? Some times the contacts stick, and hitting it can break them loose. Its an old trick for late 70 Fords having clicking solenoids.
Brian1045 28 #13 Posted May 21, 2009 Believe it or not..Mine was doing the same exact thing and if I loosened the belt to the starter it turned fine. All in all I had the belt to tight going from the starter to the fly wheel.

tarnoki 0 #15 Posted May 22, 2009 Battery is good. .............Seems like it cant gather enuff juice to turn over....... ignition coil? Cranking Amps might be low? I've had a seemingly good "charged" battery turn out to be low on CA's when tested. Swapped out battery and all was good on my GT14. Steve

I have had to clean lots of them just the bad contacts will suck the life out of a battery in no time, if you do it your self dont oil the whole thing just the bearings , dry is good on the armature you dont need anything to attract more dirt there
