troutbum70 858 #1 Posted February 5, 2020 Today I cleaned and reset the points, set the flywheel at static mark and then went to the points. With flywheel setting at static mark points were completely closed, so I reset them at .020 and now points never close no spark. If I continue by hand to roll the engine over they will open up to what looks like .030 to .040, but they never at any point fully close. So what have I forgot and done wrong? Pullstart 67,074 #2 Posted February 5, 2020 Setting points sometimes takes a few tries to get ‘em just right. I’d say when they are at the .030-.040 mark, reset at .020” and check again after a revolution.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,524 #3 Posted February 5, 2020 When you set the static mark you were likely out one turn on the flywheel. Camshaft turns once for two rotations of the crankshaft. Garry 6
troutbum70 858 #4 Posted February 5, 2020 Okay well if I continue to roll the engine by hand before it comes back around to static mark the points will open very wide I did not measure that distance, but their much wider than they are supposed to be. So you fellas are saying to make another full revolution and then reset the points.
pfrederi 18,714 #5 Posted February 5, 2020 Turn the engine over and watch the points when they are open the widest adjust to .020. then see what happens. 3
Pullstart 67,074 #6 Posted February 5, 2020 Yeah, you likely set them on the exhaust stroke, not compression. Suck, Squeeze, Bang, Blow. Squeeze and Blow are 180 degrees off.

Garry Exactly this! I've been 180 degrees out a time or two when setting timing on an engine that I've stabbed, especially on a Mopar. Engine certainly won't be happy if you try to start it!

troutbum70 858 #10 Posted February 6, 2020 Okay so back at the horse, what I find is if I roll engine till points are opened at the widest and then set them at .020, right at static mark on fly is where I get spark. It then takes 2 revolutions of fly wheel to get spark again right at static mark. And yet what I read states at that Mark is where points should be set to .020, and on mine that's where I get fire in the hole. Some where I feel I am skipping and missing something. pfrederi 18,714 #11 Posted February 6, 2020 You will only get spark every other rotation. If you get a spark when the S is in the window you are perfect. Timing light is best way to check things...
troutbum70 858 #12 Posted February 6, 2020 Okay so why if I set point gap to .020 at the static mark as manual calls for they never close at all never have fire in the hole?
pfrederi 18,714 #13 Posted February 6, 2020 (edited) The S mark is when the points just start to open not .020. Static timing hook up yo multi meter and it should go from continuity to open just as the S hits the window. EDIT..Points will open only every other time the S appears.
