48Chief 0 #1 Posted January 12, 2020 (edited) Hi All ! Got a real puzzler here and hope someone out there can come up with a solution. First of all this engine is powering my 1960's era "Lickety Log Splitter" and it has always started easily and ran great UNTIL I foolishly shut down the throttle midway thru a log split causing a backfire. It ran for a few minutes and then started to hesitate and finally died. Tried starting it for a while then decided to investigate. Checked spark, gas flow, etc and then pulled the valve cover off and found a broken intake valve collar split in half. Replaced the collar with new keepers and though all was good till I tried starting it again. NO LUCK !! Checked points..like new and gapped correctly- new plug- tore down carb and replaced bowl gaskets, checked float, cleaned all jets and carb body...should all be good now right?? NOPE..still no start. A couple of times it sounds like it make catch but doesn't fire up....then back to nothing. SOooooooooooo thought that something inside must have broken after the backfire. Tore down the whole engine to find......NOTHING! Camshaft, crankshaft, bearing, gears ALL look great....no wear showing, NO broken gears/teeth, etc. This is where I am at now.....don't want to just put everything back together in hopes that all will be good while NOTHING has actually been done to correct the NO start. I will however probably buy a new govenor gear while it's apart anyway but the old one looks fine, no back teeth, not warped . ANYONE have any suggestions on what could be the problem !!! Sure would appreciate ANY ideas !! Thanks in advance for your consideration. Oh...just remembered I also pulled the flywheel to make sure the key wasn't sheared and messed the timing up....NOPE again all looked good. Checked coil with meter and registered good as well....HELP !!!!! Edited January 12, 2020 by 48Chief add info
oldredrider 2,553 #2 Posted January 12, 2020 Check for a bent or sticking valve. Valve guide(s) may have been damaged too.
48Chief 0 #3 Posted January 12, 2020 Thanks Paul but I pulled the head off after I installed the new valve collar and turn engine over by hand just to check to see if the valves were opening and closing with no problems and see if anything looked out of the ordinary but again all looked great. The valve seats were in great shape as well. I'm running out of things to check.
wallfish 18,117 #4 Posted January 13, 2020 Wish I had something clever to add but got noth'n. Might as well give it cylinder wall hone and some new rings while you have it open, inspect all the parts again and assemble it.
