Tgalo 121 #1 Posted January 12, 2020 (edited) I noticed my recently restored 520 turns sharper left then right. Traced it to the steering shaft pivot welded offset. Now im no artist by a long shot but I drew a picture to try and show what I think is wrong. The picture of the shaft is the part Im talking about and the drawing is looking down the shaft from the gear end. The pivot the tie rods connect to is welded offset. looks factory. Is that normal? Hope this makes a little sense. Edited January 12, 2020 by Tgalo
wallfish 18,244 #2 Posted January 12, 2020 You're right, you're no ARTIST! just kid'n Actually that's pretty good and expected much less after scrolling down to look. Yes, that will certainly cause that condition. Is that fan gear welded to the shaft or is there a roll pin holding it? Looks like you got a early Monday morning or a late Friday afternoon shaft from the factory. If it's welded you can grind the weld off and weld it back at 180 deg. or place a want ad in the classified section for a replacement.
Tgalo 121 #3 Posted January 12, 2020 LOL, thanks. yes, its welded and looks factory or someone with great welding skills. I thought it was strange but it almost looks like it belongs that way. Thats why I asked. An easy fix however, thank you
Ed Kennell 42,195 #4 Posted January 12, 2020 Is the fan gear pinned to the shaft like John suggested? If it is and your fix is to repin, I find it is best to add a set screw to fix the new location during the drilling.
Tgalo 121 #5 Posted January 12, 2020 Na its welded on both ends. I can grind the weld off and re-weld it.
Lee1977 7,232 #6 Posted January 12, 2020 It's happen a few times before. Done on Monday morning with a hangover. Cut it lose and weld it back right.
dcrage 630 #7 Posted January 13, 2020 For what it is worth my 310-8 has exhibited the same symptoms for the 30 years i have owned it. Never chased the cause for this to the degree you did Tgalo.
MalMac 1,332 #8 Posted January 13, 2020 I can’t remember the exact year(s), but the factory had a whole bunch of them come out like that. Even parts that went to dealers. Some bad ones still creep up from time to time. Not near as frequent as they use to though.
