Wheel Horse Identify, Charger?

Recommended Posts

Searcher60

Hello everybody. Can anyone ID this horse? Is it a Charger? Year? What horsepower is the Kohler? What is it worth the way it sits in that pile of junk? Guess it has Hydro trans and lift, with unknown deck. Thanks everybody.

Check the dash tag numbers but I'm shooting for a 1968-69 Electro 12. It has hubcaps, electric PTO remains, hydro lift, and the right dash tag outlines. I think I can even see the white letters on the hood.
1-7235 or 1-7245 if that's the case.

Chargers came in that trim too but the dash decal outline .. is kind of blurry but I thing I see 'charger automatic'.

It’s an hour away, sitting on top of a junk pile in a shed. What should I pay for it “as is”? I have seen it from like 6 feet away, not a Charger expert here, but owned half a dozen horses. Did that engine have the balance shafts? Thanks

Engine probably has balance gears.  Note the enginee has breakerless ignition.  Its failure may be why tractor was junked.  You can convert it to battery points. Will need coil, points and new ignition switch so factor that into your offer.

Not running, sitting on the top of a junk pile, what is it worth? Thanks.

Worth depends on location and what

you want to spend on it . Is anything

known about the the trans ? Check the color of the fluid. I would start somewhere around 250 and work from there.

Unless I could check to see if the engine was free  I would start lower maybe 100.  free engine maybe 200   Are looking to fix it up or part it out???

I hate to admit it, well not really I buy tractors for parts.  If the price is right buy it, a parts tractor could turn into a project depending on it's condition and how much you like it. It's a Charger or electro/with a hydraulic lift, an added plus.  K-series do have balance gears but are very reliable.  The plus side is it looks to have been stored in doors and not out in the weather.  The rear lift on that tractor is a desirable item and I would guess the deck is a 42".  Pull the spark plug and check it for oil deposits, turn the engine buy hand and check the hydro's fluid.  If it looks good, go for it.  Buy them all!!!  :handgestures-thumbupright:  That's my motto.

Looking more at the pictures the hydro hoses are all over the place  Something must have leaked. That is an expensive fix.  (SAE#5 ORB fittings are getting very scarce).  If the cylinder leaks it is welded and not user fixable.  You will have to take it to a hydro shop or ship it to Wheelhorse man one of our vendors.

The electric PTO if it works may be worth some money ( I was shocked when  I looked recently at what they were listed for on EBAY)

If you can look the hydro filter if it is red it hasn't been changed in 30+ years

If you are parting the clevis hitch brings some money.

Look I love Charger/Electros I have 6 of them.  i do not like the decks of that era.  but they can be modified to take newer ones.  Comes down to what you want to do with it.  Parting it or fixing / using it.  .

Here's a pic of One of the chargers I just picked up. The decal on the hood looks the same as what you have. Of course
yours Is in a lot better shape.

Here is what you could tell the seller. The electronic ignition module on this tractor makes it a big risk, because you cannot get them any more. There is always a risk with a non-running tractor that they need a rebuild and without hearing it run or observing the compression, you cannot figure out if it needs a rebuild. that means that you are taking a pretty big risk. Both these statements are true.

That being said, if you are into this as a hobby, this tractor would be a good one at 100 to 125 dollars around where I live. Your cost may be a bit higher, but whatever you spend, make sure that you can walk away from the project without regrets if the parts to repair are too high   If that tractor is in original paint, it is pretty nice.

I got a 69 charger 8 with the Kohler & trigger mag ignition similar looking for 150. Tab was broke off the "coil" and far from running or rolling with the hydro. I had to haul mine out with a loader tractor picking it up in a bucket. Might factor something like that in for inconvenience factor if an Eaton in it. Good news was it ran fine after valve grind and import piston kit ($50 cost!). I might jack that up in place and try the transaxle for turning the wheels some and seeing if oil in it and not water- or stuck. Good luck. Some are parked because the carb got plugged or battery went flat from the key left on. Finding out is always fun.

Ok, well, it’s now mine. But, not sure which way to go. It’s a 69’ Electro 1-7245. However, the seat pan is a hatchet job off something else. The battery box side decals say Charger. But, the ID tag says 1-7245. Now, the 12 HP Kohler started right up, runs perfect without smoke. The trans moves, but leaks and not up to full speed, needs work. The trans is an easy fix for me. I think the electric PTO  will work also. Coil is good. Magneto ignition works perfect. Should I part out, or fix?

So so far it needs,

trans repair

fuel tank

hydraulic hose, at least one.

battery

ignition switch

choke cable

throttle cable

lights

correct seat pan

FIX IT!!!!

Decal is correct The Electro label was on the hood itself.  Hood stand says Charger

Plastic fuel tank is Broken???  Plastic repair is not that hard.  or get a used one they are not hard to come by.

Where is trans leaking?

One of the vendors here makes hydro hoses.

Hard to tell from Picture but seat pan looks correct

I do not think this is factory cut, (see pic below) and the seat cannot be raised fully because it hits the tires.

The leak is where the selector goes into the unit under the seat, large leak while running. I am more concerned about the slow speed.

I have used Wheelhorseman for hoses on a C160, excellent. I just spend hours trying to repair a crack in an expensive B&S tank, tried everything from melting to fiberglass with mesh. Nothing worked. This may be a different material as it is 50 years old. EBAY is 70 bucks.

The seat pan is what bothers me. I can fix the rest. Also, the front wheel are tilted? Is that normal? Did this tractor take the standard WH key? I have a regular WH key and it will not work.

Thanks for your help.

The hole in the fender may be an attempt to stop the crack that tends to form there.  Hitting tires before the seat is all the way back is the case on most of my chargers.

WH used used different tanks on Chargers over the years you aren't stuck with just one type.  You should contact AtoZ he has tanks and is much more reasonable than evil bay.

If you really don't want it where are you located??
