Why the lift???  It makes me paranoid it is going to fall.  I dropped my lathe two year ago when a strap broke!  Ever since that I have been paranoid about using straps . 

 

Have you ever seen Handy brand lift tables?  They are a popular American made lift table.  I bought one for the harley's but it serves double duty for mower repair too.

sadly bad luck if a Strap rip up or is underdimensioned.
I ain’t be paranoid on a Lift at all.

 

But to have a Lathe on a Strap lift,

i think would be more paranoid even if use just a 5 Times oversized Straps. 

 

It’s depending on the Weight on the goods and the situation and the things you have to lift with,

if the goods are sensitive like a Lathe i would take at least a 20 times safety on Straps

or even better using chains.

it’s an old picture...  but I had just purchased that one and used it to build Frank, my wife’s custom tractor.  Normally I use the hilo to unload but can’t tell why I used he hoist that day.  Made for a good picture moment!

My lathe is a baby 12x36 Atlas.  It is difficult to place chains on it in a safe fashion.  During the incident I used 3 new ratchet straps.  Unfortunately the extras only slowed it down because of its awkward load center.  Once one broke it was all she wrote.  One strap far exceeded the weight capacity of the whole lathe by 1.5 - 2 times.  It only takes one sharp edge and the straps lifting days are over.  Now, I'm pro chain for overhead lifting.  Might use a strap to adjust load angle, but try to lean towards chain or cable on everything else.

Is it bad I forgot the model?  I think it is a 3996.  The fall broke my quick change gear box handles at the quick detent knob.  I since bought two different headstock units for spare parts.  Thinking about making some cool accessory with the extra parts.

I just checked I was off a digit it is a 3986.  I used it to repair the u-joint coupling on my 843 Bobcat.  You can see it working on video #2. I am no machinist, but I can make chips on a good day ;).
