Wheelhorse Wes 279 #1 Posted November 16, 2019 So I have a question for the Wheelhorse genius’s on here. So I bought a 603 back in April and I just bought another 603 last Sunday. My question is why does my first 603 have serial number. 33477 but my newest one has a 62- ( I can’t really make out the numbers but faintly I can barely read 1328 those 4 numbers are really just a shot in the dark because they aren’t complete....point is , is this newest 603 an early one? 953 nut 60,377 #2 Posted November 16, 2019 Any 1963 Wheel Horse with a "62" serial number was early production. The Ponds were very thrifty and used up the old stock before breaking out the new.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,527 #3 Posted November 16, 2019 In 1962 they used the 62-xxxx serial on tractors and used A-xxxx serial on attachments. They even used an A-7355 on a 603 tractor to use it up. Click on the picture. The 603 is likely the first Special model they produced. This practise continued over the years to use up an excess of parts inventory. Wheelhorse Wes 279 #4 Posted November 17, 2019 Thanks guys. So I’ll ad something more to this 603 discussion.....so in my 62- serial number one. The “brace” that the gas tank rests on has a piece of angle iron the same as the side ones the tank sits on going across but my other 603 just had a piece of flat stock.....the 62- serial number one also DOES NOT have the flat stock with the ends bent on an angle that the gas tank backs up on or rests against... Now the 62- one has the 1963 brake pedal but the other 603 has the 62 flag style. Sorry if I’m rambling....both my 603’s have the “flat” style 61’ cast foot rests, I know I’ve read on here somewhere that the early 603’s came with the unique stepped style 603 foot rests....... Wheelhorse Wes 279 #5 Posted November 17, 2019 So I opened the PDF file (thanks by the way) the picture shows the angle iron piece I talked about above and Does not have the brace piece I mentioned.....maybe the PDF/ owners manual was the first version probably... I’ve noticed that the hood bolts rub the gas tank without the brace on so I’m just assuming that Wheelhorse added that onto the later 603’s
