Neil chapman

Hey guys new to the site, I’m trying to restore a wheel horse that was my father in laws for my wife. It looks to be a early 1960’s serial number 56108 without a motor it does have dual rear wheels and the deck measures 36inch wide deck from outside to outside  I will put pictures on soon.  Thanks for any help

I believe it’s a 633 but the duel wheels have me confused.  The motor my father in law put is does not fit, so I’m looking for a replacement that would fit. Thanks

I do believe that is a Model 701? Closed grille. I think only the 701 looked that way. The 633 has a slotted front grille.

Was the dual rear wheel a option on most any tractor?

:text-welcomewave: @Neil chapman!  I believe @Stepney is correct on it being a ‘61 model.  That front axle is 61/62 and my 502 is a slotted grille hood.  Any small block K series Kohler should fit just fine in there!

Here’s a couple round hoods from my stable, for some inspiration!

Very nice   It looks like it was originally a electric start, but he no longer as the dash for it which is probably why he put a recoil start in    Definitely got some stuff to look up. Thanks for all your help.  If this goes well I just picked up a 500 special from my grandfathers place who recently passed that I would like to restore also.  Thanks again

I'm also going with model 701. The steering in 62 started using 2 tie rods, one to each wheel. Notice the 1961 steering.

Original engine would've been a K161 7hp Kohler. Electric start with a starter/generator.

Welcome to the forum.

Not necessarily the deck you have but the one supplied in 1961 for the model 701.

701  Looks like it has a fender brace and the wide steering fan gear.

One more vote for 701. It was the first front engine :wh: and a big step forward in the garden tractor industry.

These brochures should prove to be interesting.

It looks like someone  welded a extension to the back for a battery but I could be mistaken

Yeah, they needed room for a battery. The engine in it takes up the room for the original battery tray.

It's only a "bigger project" if you are going full on factory correct. Get a K181 S/G engine and you'll be fine. A more modern gear drive starter and you will have the same problem with battery location but the bracket is already on there if you go that route

ok I’m just trying to get it working right now and would like to completely restore it next yr as I’m also working on a furguson to 30 tractor that was his.  I will look into that as soon as possible thanks again    Luckily my other wheel horse 500 special has all parts and has not been messed with

Firstly Welcome to :rs:,

nice machine btw.

Put the battery in the Back makes sometimes sense to get more weight on Reartyres.

it can also be a simple counterweight hintch, if Engine don‘t needs a battery, or maybe a possibility for a toolbox,

i think just PO can answer that.
