C-121 trouble starting

Hey guys, 

 

Im looking for some input on getting my tractor started. It was running fine until about a week ago when I could hear a slight skip when running fully open. It sounded like it wasn’t getting fuel. I changed oil, topped off with fuel and noticed it was running at full throttle while parked no problem. I took the mower deck off to service the other day and I removed mule drive. I went to back the horse out of my garage and it throttled down shortly after backing about ten feet. I started it back up again no problem, went to reverse and it throttled down again after about five feet. I took a look at the fuel filter and noticed it was dry. I pumped out the gas from the tank  detached the filter and pressurized the tank. I was able to see fuel come out of the line, so I refilled the tank and reattached the filter. I changed the spark plug and tested to see if there was a spark which there was. I let it sit for a few hours and noticed the filter is still not filling up with fuel. when I attempt to start it it turns and sounds like it just can’t catch to fully start up. It turns the motor but doesn’t come to a start. Any suggestions?

Can you pull the fuel line to the carburetor and direct it into a container?  If you can, run the starter to see if you are getting a good flow of fuel.

Might be something blocking the line from inside of the gas tank.  I pulled out a dead white spider that was blocking the gas at the shut off valve on a horse like yours once.  

   Another thing to consider, a lot of the members end up installing an electric fuel pump to aid in getting gas to the carb.  It can save a starter.  :occasion-xmas:

Ok thanks for the input guys. I’ll try checking the tank and seeing if there’s any flow to the carb.

If you or a previous owner have been using gas with Ethanol in it the deposits that this junk leaves behind are the most likely culprit.  Use this site to find a station that sells the real thing.           https://www.pure-gas.org/

 Remove the fuel line and filter and replace them, fill the tank with real gas and add some Seafoam at twice the rate shown on the can. It should remove the deposits from the rest of your fuel system.

Hey guys so I improved gas flow and I took apart carb and gave a thorough cleaning. Gets good fuel flow now. Still having the same problem where it won’t turn over though...I uploaded a video so you guys could see...Don’t mind the running car had to use  jump as the battery kept draining fairly quickly when I was trying to start...any thoughts on what the problem is or could possibly be?

Sorry could not watch the video because I don't know my Microsoft password.

 

Make sure you are getting at least 12 volts to the ignition coil (+) if battery ignition. Low voltage = weak spark.

 

When it is acting up check for voltage between the engine block and the negative battery post. Should be 0 volts. If there is any voltage present check the battery ground cable between the engine block and the tractor frame. This model should have the engine mounted on rubber. Poor engine block ground = low coil voltage = weak spark

Also do this check when the starter motor is trying to start the engine. The higher starter motor load will stress a bad ground.

Maybe it's just me but even with compression release that engine took a longer while than normal to come to a stop after you let off the key. Stuck valve?

Ok sounds good I will take a at look at that as well. Hopefully between the voltage or the valve one of those is the issue.

It sounds like it was trying to run, to me.  Some spark, some fuel, just not the right amount of each to keep running.

 

 

 I’d suggest checking the points again and verifying voltage at the coil when the key is switched on as well.  You’re close!  :handgestures-thumbupright:
