McGrew 461 #1 Posted October 27, 2019 Hi folks, Since I have the throttle linkage working correctly now on my Raider 10, it no longer takes two men and a small boy to change the engine speed. The cable was so hard to pull, I just left it set at around 2500 rpm, and rarely changed it... Now that all is working correctly, i want to set the idle rpm, but cannot find a spec. Can someone tell me what it should be? The engine is a Tecumseh HH40. Thanks! Danny
WHX?? 51,784 #2 Posted October 27, 2019 Most small engines that are splash lubricated should be set to 800-1000 RPM. Anything less the engine might not get proper lubrication. Any thing more just more wear and tear. Pressure fed motors I have no idea ... perhaps a little lower.???

McGrew 461 #4 Posted October 27, 2019 Thanks guys! I have a pretty comprehensive manual for this engine, but could not find a spec for the idle RPM... I swear it has every other thing you could ever want to know about the Tecumseh 8-18 horse engines... I agree about not setting it so low the splash lubrication is not adequate. I will set it at a minimum of 1000 and go from there depending on how well it idles at that speed. Thanks again! Danny
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,492 #5 Posted October 27, 2019 HH40? 1800 rpm idle speed in this manual Garry
McGrew 461 #6 Posted October 28, 2019 Garry, Thank you! Yes it is an HH140. I think you may have attached the wrong manual, as the HH140 is larger than anything I see in the attachment. FWIW, I tried setting the idle to 1000 RPM, and the engine was not happy. I bumped the idle to 1250, and it liked it better, but it has a hesitation when accelerating from idle. If 1800 is the spec, that may explain the hesitation off idle. Thanks again! Danny
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,492 #7 Posted October 28, 2019 I wondered if the HH40 was a typo but when I looked for the HH140 I could not find one. Found one for the HH120 plus others and they still show 1800 rpm. These pages came from an old manual I have so maybe they did not have a HH140 at the time. McGrew 461 #8 Posted October 28, 2019 Garry, The HH140 appears to be a bit of an oddball, even for Tecumseh... The only place I found any information on it is in Bolens literature. I did find one Bolens site that says to set the idle for that engine at 1700. I will give it a try and see how it feels. Thanks again! Danny
McGrew 461 #9 Posted October 30, 2019 OK guys, I bumped the idle speed up to 1700, and the engine seems happy at that speed. Did not get a chance to test it other than no load, but the hesitation just off idle seems much better. Thanks for all the advice and info! Danny
