Just a guess

But maybe exhaust valve sticking. Typically a back fire through the carb indicates the exhaust valve is not fully seated during ignition.

Maybe timing advanced if the points are loose?

Carbon buildup on exhaust valve holding it open?

:text-yeahthat:            Use a timing light to set the points and see if the problem goes away.

Start with the easy stuff.

look at what walfish said then also if that’s not the issue then pull the flywheel and make sure the key isn’t sheared.

I can’t tell you how many “rebuilt” engines I’ve had in my shop that the owner didn’t torque the flywheel resulting in the key being sheared or keyway on the crank being destroyed.
