cjb398 25 #1 Posted October 4, 2019 What all is involved in terms of cost, availability of parts, and level of skill and effort, to replace a center mower spindle?
Ed Kennell 41,775 #2 Posted October 4, 2019 to the Sorry for the late response....I've been at a tractor show. Without knowing exactly what deck we are dealing with, it is not possible to give specific answers to your questions. Hopefully there is a metal tag with a model number. In general, to remove a center spindle you will have to remove the deck from the tractor. Remove the nut holding the pulley on the spindle. Remove the pulley. This can be a challenge getting it off without damage. Remove the blade. Remove the 4 bolts holding the spindle in the deck shell. Remove the spindle. A new spindle if it is available may cost $100.

Stepney 2,354 #4 Posted October 4, 2019 What sort of deck? If it's the RD ont he model in your profile, it's a very easy task as outlined above. Earlier ones can be a little more difficult to source.
peter lena 9,231 #5 Posted October 4, 2019 agree with ed on the spindle replacement, if you want to make pulley removal easy , i use these ,https://www.harborfreight.com/hanhttps://www.harborfreight.com/hand-tools/hammers-pry-bars/pry-bars/4-piece-heavy-duty-pry-bar-set-1654.htmld-tools/hammers-pry-bars/pry-bars/4-piece-heavy-duty-pry-bar-set-1654.html, the bolts under the pulley that hold the spindle to the mower deck , are the perfect spot to lever on , with the end of the bar against the spindle shaft, i use two bars , for even solid down push. remove top nut and lubricate ,pulley pops off without damage, pete
cjb398 25 #6 Posted October 5, 2019 I don't know the exact model of the deck. It's one I saw listed for sale that said it would need a new center spindle. I think I'll pass on it, more trouble than it's worth.
peter lena 9,231 #7 Posted October 5, 2019 good choice , if you can find a solid unit ,that does not need a rebuild , that would let you get the use and operational experience needed to use it. pete
