Crank catches

Recommended Posts

The Tuul Crib

I have this K1 81 that is driving me crazy. I turn the crank and it feels like  something stops it and then you can turn it and it stops it again.  I pulled the oil pan and looked inside and cannot see anything out of the ordinary. Any ideas what does could be ?

I pulled ahead don't see any obstructions there. I pull the pan off and looked inside

And could not see anything there. I am kind of baffled of what it could be. When you turn the crank it will stop and then you can turn it some more and it will turn again and then stop .

Does it still do it with the head off?

Just guessing but if you have the head and oil pan off and don't see anything obvious, maybe something in the crank to cam gears or a broken gear tooth?

Im not finding any broken teeth on the

gears. It kind of feels almost like its dry inside if that makes sense. You turn the crank a little bit and then hit friction and then turn it past that point and then friction again. When l get more time ill go in to

in more detail.

Well this is off the same motor. What's funny is I just picked up another 12 horse pulled off the fly wheel on it and all the magnets were stuck to the stater. I make sure to Mark those before I pulled them

off!

Check the cam, had similar problem on my k181, cam or pin was bent, swapped out with a different cam and pin fixed it.

When you rotate the crank shaft are you seeing the valves open and close?   Could be a broken cam shaft.

Valves are moving fine . I hoping not to

tare this one down. Its possible that it could be a sticky valve.

How far does it turn before it meets friction? That'll help narrow it down.

Something is probably wrong with the cylinder walls or the crank. Pull the rod cap and see how it looks.

I'm going to pull the rod cap When I get home and see what's going on with the crankshaft first and then go from there.

OK so I got home flipped  the motor over took the rod cap off and pulled the piston out. Problem solved the crank turns freely once again. Now. Looking in the cylinder I can still see the crosshatches. The piston is  stamped STD.  My thought is to hone it out a little put new rings in it and I'm good to go

Not sure.  I pulled the rings off the piston and it moved freely inside the cylinder.
