Stepney 2,354 #1 Posted September 24, 2019 (edited) Hello, all. Bought a very rough 516-h the other day. Only wanted it for the deck and planned to part the rest out .. but to my shock it actually started right up after I bypassed the ignition switch. Starts instantly and idles real nice. Seems smooth across the board. I've not yet checked compression, but it 'sounds' even enough when cranking .. IE there isnt a cylinder just 'missing', IE valve seats. To be honest I'm shocked at this because the rubber oil filter blank cover is gone from the shroud and the air just blows right out of it, as well as the fuel pump holes which are also open. I taped over the holes just for now and blew out the fins. Seems to run 'warm' but not alarmingly and it's a clean runner. I'm planning to do a teardown and decarbon/valve check. I think this tractor will wind up heading down the road for parts as it's in very rough shape. I do have a nice 520 chassis I will probably put this engine in. So mainly.. seeing as the PO likely ran this thing hard, and for a long time, with little airflow to the rear cylinder.. before I start putting money into a possible anchor, what else should I look for? From what all I can tell it runs very nicely, and the oil light goes off immediately once started. But I want to go through it to alleviate possible future issues. P.S. Meet the GrumpyHorse.
