Has anyone taken a muffler apart

Recommended Posts

I’m talking about old ones! Kohler K series. The newer ones I haven’t had a problem with...yet! The rusty muffler has a noise to it when you shake it...and it sounds like their is nothing there once the muffler is on it and it’s started! Has anyone cut into the bottom of it and stuffed some packing in there? I’m not sure what’s in the muffler.

Pullstart

I briefly touched on using half of a Kohler muffler on Frank’s stack.  It should be easy for you to cut the weld around the base of the muffler, pack it better then weld it back up.

Ok! Question is “ where does the loudness come from?” Is the any packing in there?

Most likely not... These are low compression low HP engines... I used to work in one of the nation's top aftermarket car exhaust factories and packing was only used in performance or high end applications...

No packing. Just perforated pipe and 6 changes of direction if I’m counting correctly. They start getting loud when they leak anywhere. Any rust though at the top seam gets real loud.

Ok! It has been welded around the second muffler clamp! I will take a look there!👍
