formariz 12,040 #1 Posted April 16, 2009 Look at I managed to "steal" off of eBay. Has anyone attempted to install one of these on a ball burner? The tank of course gets eliminated and the regulator and switches will have to be relocated but the generator may be in the way of the shifter. I already tapped the exhaust outlet. I hope I can bring myself to use it.Its almost a shame to do so.
ol550 830 #2 Posted April 16, 2009 Looks good enough for a centerpiece on the dining room table. But it's not. I have seen somewhere a Suburban with a starter/generator mounted ahead of the hood stand. Plan to do it on one of my 400's for a show "driver" Go ahead and Git-R-Done. At least not without some major mods like lengthening the frame in front of tranny.

As previously mentioned... :omg:
stevinator 1 #5 Posted April 17, 2009 I have an rj 58 and maybe you could put it in front of the hood stand, and at that point maybe leave the tank on it. You could always change the hole for the tank and fill and hide the old hole.I wish I had the problem of having that motor. :omg:
linen beige 15 #6 Posted April 17, 2009 I believe the electric start option that was used on the 400 was a 110 volt motor that used house current to power the starter. Kind of a pain to run a cord out to the back 40 if it died on you! (I know they had a pull start back up.) There is plenty of room between the engine and shifter for this to fit. The shifter can be bent as they were for the early '62s with the HY-2 set up. BUT, there is NOT MUCH room between the engine and transmission for it. At a minimum the voltage regulator and coil would have to be mounted somewhere else. You may be able to mount this set up in front of the hood stand, but the steering shaft would have to be dealt with. As would the lift arm and it's sector. Another approach would be to remove the voltage regulator and mount the starter /generator in front of the engine, below the carb, between the engine and the hood stand (At least it looks like there's room.). You could then mount the voltage regulator to the front of the hood stand. There are several options for mounting the coil. The battery could be mounted in the tool box like it was in the 550. This would allow you to use the tractor's stock fuel tank in it's original location. Although they may look the same the tractor's tank is larger than the one mounted to this engine.
