jason dewitt 0 #1 Posted September 9, 2019 hello i got a hores and from what i can tell the tag ids as a c-101 8 speed but this is a hydro and what deck would it have havent looked for tags on deck thanks
Sparky-(Admin) 23,314 #2 Posted September 9, 2019 So it’s definitely a 1978 or 1979 machine. The C-101 wasn’t offered as a hydro, the smallest HP machine with a Hydro then was the C-121. I’m thinking if that’s the I’d tag under the dash then some one has swapped the dash tower from a C-101 into a hydro machine...or took the time to install a hydro tranny setup in a C-101. What are the numbers off the motor?
Burnerman 759 #3 Posted September 9, 2019 My 78 10hp C101 is a 10k801 wouldn’t this be a 12hp?

What is missing on the tag are the first two numbers which have been scrapped off because they were painted or printed on. Full model number is 91-10K802 9 = 1979 1 = garden tractor as opposed to lawn tractor which would be 2 10 = engine horse power K = Kohler engine 8 = 8-speed transmission 02 = parts list identifier 15223 is the serial number 9022 is the Julian build date = 22nd day of 1979 = Monday January 22, 1979 Garry

Could it be that a factory worker having a bad day riveted the wrong tag onto it while on the line? Is the engine a K-241 or a K-301? What is the "Spec #" on the engine tag? Looks like a good and we are glad you found us.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,528 #8 Posted September 9, 2019 The 1979 C-121 Automatic came with a manual attachment lift. The larger engined automatics came with hydraulic lift. Garry

gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,528 #11 Posted September 9, 2019 Kohler made serial number 9761022 in 1979. Wheel Horse used K241AS-46805d in a 1980 model C-105 8-Speed model number 01-10K801. Garry

Nothing wrong with it, it works - use it. Unless you have a burning desire to make it 100% original.

jason dewitt 0 #15 Posted September 10, 2019 ok heres more to add to the mistery i found this tag today behind engine below battery box by the steering gear so it has 2 tags one below dash and one under battery by the steering
jason dewitt 0 #16 Posted September 10, 2019 can the engine be a 12 hp and have a 10 hp shroud ? if so how can i id the engine
oldredrider 2,553 #17 Posted September 11, 2019 You can determine engine size by pulling the head off and measuring the bore and stroke. An actual engine ID may be lost in the history books.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,528 #18 Posted September 11, 2019 Have seen a few of the ID plates beside the fan gear before but never paid any attention to what models did this. Recorded all this with the hope the mystery will be solved someday. If I have any of the numbers wrong correct me. Click on the fuzzy pictures to see the notes.
