Throttle cable thread pitch?

Recommended Posts

Pullstart

One of my random small engines (maybe Briggs?) had a tapped hole near the carb for throttle adjustment by spinning the cable body.  I tried 1/4-20 (too large) and 10-24 too small).  I don’t have a 12-24 tap... might that be the pitch I’m looking for?

Wow! I haven’t seen anything with that setup in a long time.

Its nothing you’ll find in a tap.

I counted 18 winds per inch on the cable... maybe it was a special thread.  The cable mic’s at .190 o.d.

Bummer.  My throttle cable progressively slides through this clamp.  I thought a nut on top would help prevent that.

Those casing nuts are a special thread and they may also come in left and right-hand threads because the cables are wound left and right. B&S used them in the mid-50's.

Remove the clip and stick it on a wood dowel. Use a hammer and flat cold chisel to add ridges to the clip.

I just tapped it closed a bit to see how it works.  If trouble persists, I’ll dowel it.  Thanks!

953 nut

Take a small punch and put a dimple in the clamp, problem solved.
