Engine drive pulley alignment

Recommended Posts

Goldnboy

I replaced the 8hp Engine and installed a 14Hp today all went well untill I engaged the PTO and it would not spin. So I loosened the mule drive and it would spin but the belt was floppy and it sounded odd. When I installed the drive pulley it was about a 1/4" away from the belt guard for clearance. Then I put the friction disc and pto bell. I did notice that the pto brake couldn't be installed. Can anyone point me to correct distance?

Tranny drive pulley should be about 1/8 - 3/16 out from the block

Its a simplicity spec motor, changed to wheelhorse specs. Crank is 3 1/8" but 1" diameter, but I have the correct drive pulley.

The old setup is shown below with a large gap between disc on the K181.

does the pto lever "snap" into place when you engage it?? None of my pto clutches have that much clearance when disengaged. I bought a C141 recently that the deck would stop turning as soon as I hit any grass. I tightened the adjustment and it works as it should.

The 8 hp engine you had uses a different Engine bracket (blue arrow) for the PTO  (104732) than the big block models (104729)  That may be your problem.

I had already planned for the different Bracket size.

Think I saw this question up on the FB page. Your clutch gap looks way too wide. Sounds like your just too loose.

The gap between the friction disc wasn't the problem,  I moved the drive pulley in to 1/4" from the engine block. Put the belt on the Pto bell and noticed the belt was frayed along the ends, and after investigating more the belt slipped onto the bottom grove of the middle deck spindle.:bitch:

Well that was a good way to destroy the mule drive belt.

So I installed my spare mule drive belt and double checked the mule pulleys and put it back together and mowed the yard.
