7dad34 41 #1 Posted September 1, 2019 I just got an RJ 58, not in terrible shape and I want to restore it. Where can I find information on what I need ? Correct motor is the big one right now. Pictures would be helpful. I looked on Tractordata but there's not much information. Thanks in advance
7dad34 41 #2 Posted September 1, 2019 I see I need a 4 hp Kohler. Not sure what's on it right now. I'm going to dig into it this afternoon
870express 116 #3 Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) Or maybe a 3.6 hp Clinton . . . . ? This same RJ-58 originally had the 4 hp Kohler on it - below. Edited September 1, 2019 by 870express
870express 116 #4 Posted September 1, 2019 We need to see photos of your tractor to see what shape it is in, so we can advise you what it needs.
oliver2-44 8,874 #5 Posted September 1, 2019 1st off, 2nd You've come to the right place for lots of friendly help! The Kohler 4HP K90 or K91, or the 1290 Clinton would be the correct motor. The Clintons are much harder to find. Check out some of our vendors in the Vendor section. 870express 116 #14 Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) There should be a cable that attaches to the "lift" arm and to the lift handle. Edited September 1, 2019 by 870express
870express 116 #15 Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) Your tractor also needs a belt guard and exhaust shield. The throttle cable and kill switch go on the back end of the hood. 870express 116 #19 Posted September 1, 2019 (edited) It needs a new shift handle boot to keep water out of the transmission. I got one at this place - https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/transmissions.html#!/Wheel-horse-3577-shifter-boot/p/84932555/category=23548039 . Also need to look for new rear axle seals. It looks like the previous owner had it set up just for plowing (snow) with that front blade, and wasn't concerned about keeping it original. He probably replaced the original engine with one that was easier to get parts for. You can find Kohler and Clinton engines on the web, but that also means searching for parts which can sometimes be a bit frustrating. Does the current Tecumseh engine run? Pullstart 59,827 #22 Posted September 1, 2019 to ! Like Richard said, the family the tractors together.... has more tractors! Good luck with your RJ, it looks like it’s going to need it!
7dad34 41 #23 Posted September 1, 2019 Yes, the engine runs. I know a sheet metal wizard and have already contacted him about the rear of the hood. I like a challenge and it seems I have found one. I might have paid more than some of you would have but these don't pop up for sale all that often so I grabbed it. It's not something that I will be working hard and fast on, just a cool little tractor that I have always liked and now I have one
