Engine Pulley Function / Repair on B-111 Vertical

Recommended Posts

I'm restoring a '78 B-111. I just picked it up a couple weeks ago, surface rust but restorable condition. I installed a starter and magneto and the engine now runs well. The deck needed a dismantling, clean-up, repainting and new bearings and pulleys. I'm about 1/2 way thru that now.

I did have a question - one that's prob not a common question for most Wheel Horses b/c this is a B&S 11HP vertical shaft - but I think my engine pulley isn't working correctly. I'm going to search around for the answer, but the pulley has the drivetrain pulley on top and then the PTO on the bottom. I think they are supposed to work independently - an actuator pushes the PTO pulley up to engage and down to disengage (I think this is how it works, not sure). But it seems that mine is frozen in the engage position. I removed a couple of the snap rings and it should come lose, I'd think. The maintenance manual just says "remove the pulley" something like that with little detail as to how.

So should the PTO pulley drop down to disengage, is that right? Is it appropriate for me to expect that after I remove the snap rings, the PTO should slide down?

Thanks,

You are correct that the bottom PTO part should drop down. Mine was frozen in the

engaged position as well, and was pretty tough to get "un-Stuck".

The PTO with the lining on it fits up into kind of a "Cup".

Great, thanks for the info. I must say that I'm lovin' my Wheel Horse resto project, but likewise this forum is a fantastic resource and great group of people. Glad to join the group.

Hey!!! Success!!!! I just got it off - thanks for the good advice. I used a long bar to push down on the pulley while I tapped it with a big hammer. After about 20 min of banging - I squirted some WD40 on it to no avail. Next I squirted some Liquid Wrench and in about 5 mins - flop, it came right off. I've always been a bigger fan of Liquid Wrench to WD40.

Thanks again to the RedSquare.
