Commando 800 pto issue

Back to tinkering with commando 800 pto, does the snap ring in picture make sense to allow the center hub to apply pressure needed to engage the pto? If so is this a special snap ring that is a little thinner than normal? With that snap ring in place and center in place I am unable to get outside snap ring in place as the center protrudes to far out all but covering outside snap ring slot.

Parts list does not show an inner snap ring.

I could not find it listed either. So what keeps the center spindle from going all the way towards the roller bearing which does allow engagement of pto?

The pto on my 417 has a flange in the pto hub for the spindle to ride against and forcing the pto against the disk for engagement.

Is the ID behind the snap ring smaller than in front where the bearing sits?

An inch and 3 quarters internal snap ring fits both inside and outside. I have not found a parts diagram for that pto, as I said the pto on my 417-8 has a flange that keeps the outside bearing spindle from from going all the way back to the roller bearings in the pto. I believe the pto requires two snap rings, but they are apparently thinner to allow them both to fit.

Have never heard of that type of retaining ring having different thicknesses.

Looked for a narrower bearing but the same one has always been used. 5196 replaced by 109842

Wonder if only an inner ring is used?  The bearing can not fall out I don't think and the disc is not pulled back against a brake.

Back to the first pto's when they were an option they just show one ring.

Did the first ones use just a snap ring in center of pto? And you are correct the outside bearing spindle can not come out. Thank you for your response Gary.

This is what I have for the 5196/109842 bearing

.750"x1.781"x.610"

3/4"x1-25/32"x39/64"

Is that what you have?

I would say yes but will have to get out calipers and measure to be sure. The more I study the pto I believe that snap ring inside is required, but they realized over time its longevity was not good because of friction and wear. And that is why the later pto's have a heavy flange incorporated into it, which is what the pto on my 1986 417-8 has. Not sure why it has groves for two snap rings, unless the bearing  assembly I have is the thickness of a snap ring to long.

The measurements you gave me are the same except the outside bearing ID according to my digital calipers IS 1 AND 3/4'S.
