mikeeyre74 289 #1 Posted July 31, 2019 We picked up this 308–8 for my father he other day, it’s one of the newer ones with the magnum 8 engine? I’m not all that familiar with this and I don’t have any small block motors anymore in my fleet… Something about this throttle/governor set up it just doesn’t seem right. When I move the throttle to high and low speed, it sometimes gets snagged and doesn’t want to move freely. I suspect the linkage isn’t correct, but I don’t know how it’s supposed to be? On the other end of things, I noticed that the throttle lever on the dashboard is all bent up. I can’t bend it as best I could, but it seems to bend it self back into this awful situation regardless. any idea on what my issue might be? My Internet search hasn’t shown me anything that I can compare this to, so I am a bit at a loss.
peter lena 9,279 #2 Posted July 31, 2019 you could try lubrication first, and disconnect one end of it to verify the cable is not kinked or bent, i regularly lube my cable linkage to keep it free. get it to run out the bottom end to ensure its sliding in an oil film , pete
richmondred01 2,307 #3 Posted August 2, 2019 It looks right to me. i just finished a m8. Yes the governor linkages are different. The governor disc used in the k161, k181 and m8 are different then the larger engines. They are a bit tricky to dial in.
mikeeyre74 289 #4 Posted August 2, 2019 Ok then, that answers that. Went to take the shroud off to clean inside the Bendix but found you can't remove the engine cover shroud uh bless you pull the gas tank. And you can't pull the gas tank without removing it from the tractor?? Shesh. This is painful.
richmondred01 2,307 #5 Posted August 2, 2019 Yes. And you have to remove the starter to remove the tank. Be extra careful when you remove a magnum starter. They will open up if not careful.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,489 #6 Posted August 2, 2019 Looks to me the cable should approach the governor linkage from more like the 6 o'clock position so it does not require as much force to increase rpm. I think that is why it bends the bracket at the dash. The service manual shows there needs to be 1/16" clearance between the governor arm and the cross shaft bushing nut to prevent interference on page 6A13 Garry
