518H - Spraying oil

Recommended Posts

TC10284

Recently replaced the governor Ball spacer with a metal one on this tractor. Not the first time I've done this process before and have been successful on others. But this tractor is showing an annoying problem. I finished with the gov ball spacer replacement last week. Tested it out for 10 or 15 minutes. Parked it and noticed oil was being sprayed by the flywheel.

Took it apart again yesterday, checked the gasket. It was a new gasket at the time of the gov ball spacer replacement. It is not torn. I have made sure all the bolts are tight in the cover. Put it all back together today and it exhibits the same problem. Very frustrating because I am tired of taking it all apart again.

Something is dripping oil onto the flywheel and the flywheel is slinging it all around the housing.

The one difference I hear with this tractor is that I can hear what sounds like air being blown near the lower part of the flywheel that speeds up and slows down with engine throttle. You can hear it best at idle. Sounds like air is being blown by a gasket somewhere down there but again, the new gasket looked fine. I cannot see where it would be leaking.

Any thoughts?

I'll check. I was thinking of replacing it anyway because it's a little short. I get why, but it's a little too short.

Oddly enough, I had to replace the fuel Pump the first time with a new one because it randomly stopped working after tearing it down the first time.

Took it apart AGAIN today. Found that the gearcase gasket was not sealing at the bottom. Replaced with a new one. Also replaced the pulse hose for the fuel pump. Checked what I could see. All looked good. Put all back together. Started up, ran for <10min. Still slinging oil. Seems to only do it when I open it to full throttle or close to it. Took a chance and tightened the oil filter with an oil filter wrench. Could tighten it quite a bit. Tested again but still slinging oil. No change.
It comes out any holes in the engine shroud, including the large air filter hole (if ran long enough), the fuel pump hole, etc.

Extremely frustrated at this point...

What else could be causing this?

I think I found the problem after tearing down again. Stupid me didn't recognize it the first time...

Apparently the little rubber seal with the spring that wraps around it, that then goes into the gear case cover was stuck to the shaft. I had to compare it to another Onan that I already had torn down. I'm hoping reseating it will resolve the issue and I don't have to buy a new one.

Yep, that was the issue. I reseated the seal on the gear case cover and it didn't leak, and it also stopped the air leak noise

OK, still leaking a little. Took it back down again. Found that the rubber piece is torn some. Where can I get replacement seals? The number on the metal part of the seal is 538036 and when I google that, I see one on eBay for $20.

Also seeing the oil pressure light flash at me constantly regardless of throttle position now.

EDIT:
Dug some more and found it:
