byoung36 18 #1 Posted July 26, 2019 (edited) Picked this up last week knowing nothing about the Onan or the 520.There was a miss in the engine which I thought at first was a spark plug or a coil issue. After a few post here and some great advice from members I ran a compression test only to find the rear cylinder had 0 compression. Further inspection lead me to find a broken rod, which I never would have suspected because other than missing the engine made no odd noises. I was able to source another p220 with 800hrs, so after a couple nights swapping everything this 520h runs like a new machine once more. I have had many WH tractor over the years all of which were 8 speed tractors with the exception of one which was a C-195. The C-195 was a great tractor but I was never impressed with the hydro trans, it always wanted to speed up going down hill. After using this 520 for a couple days nows my opinion on the this hydro has changed. I have been really impressed with this machine and I think I will definitely keep it around for a long time. Thanks you everybody for the help. Edited July 26, 2019 by byoung36 6

new2horses 287 #5 Posted July 26, 2019 I also agree the 520 Hydro is a nice machine, I have one, and with that 60" deck, mine has one of those too, it will eat up the grass. But the XI series that replaced this model is, in my opinion, a superior machine.

The reason the rod broke is a mystery to me. There was about a teaspoon of gas water mixture that came out when I took the head off, but the piston wasn’t stuck. The rod broke close to the crank and the bearing end came off the crank and is in the oil pan. I haven’t pulled the oil pan yet to investigate further.
