953 nut 60,391 #3 Posted July 15, 2019 Having engine problems can can kill the value of a . Unless you want to take on the task of rebuilding/replacing the engine I would hesitate on buying that particular tractor. If you like getting up to your elbows into a project then I would suggest paying no more than $ 250 considering the amount of work and money you will be investing. A properly maintained Onan engine is a great power plant, but they can be rather expensive to repair. One option would be to re-power it with a 22 HP Predator engine. https://www.harborfreight.com/22-hp-670cc-v-twin-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-epa-61614.html?_br_psugg_q=predator+engines 1
lynnmor 7,859 #4 Posted July 15, 2019 The deck is worth a fair amount. If you can come up with a price for the tractor with the mower, send me a PM, I may be interested. I can do engine repairs if it is salvageable, so it "might" be a good project for me.
JAinVA 4,638 #5 Posted July 15, 2019 What it is worth is always a subjective question.Based on your previous post you now own this machine.I agree with lynmor that the deck is worth some money alone.I take it you may be looking at unloading this machine.Onans are not cheap to rebuild .They are a powerful powerplant that sound good under load.If you paid $1500 to $2000 then you will have to do some work and keep it some time to break even.It has a lot of potential but making enough off it to retire on is not in the cards.JMHO,Luck,JAinVA
The Tuul Crib 7,339 #6 Posted July 15, 2019 Could the no compression possibly be a valve issue?

Yes, a valve could be stuck open or severely burned, he needs to pull the head and evaluate if he wants to pursue repairing the engine. I do think it would be rare for either condition to exist in a running engine.

There is no movement from the rear piston , so it must be a broken rod.

A friend of mine bought it at the action for $ 2000 for his daughter but she wanted a z turn instead. I told him I would possibly trade my Dixon Z turn for it if everything checked out good. I have $1500 in the Dixon. I also have WH tiller and other attachments that I could use on this tractor if it was running good.

With that deck in 1997 that tractor combo was at least $8k, I bought mine (a left over Anniversary) new in 1998 sticker price of $7500 for $6300 still have it today its my snow blowing rig.
