ebinmaine 71,559 #1 Posted July 9, 2019 I know these carburetors are kind of famous, or infamous, depending on how you like them. I've seen some information online about the emulsion tube not sealing quite right on the seats and allowing fuel to go out the bottom of the carb. That is not the problem I'm having. The two halves are held together by 3 screws. I'm assuming the surface is warped on one or both of those pieces. I'm going to try putting the bottom half on sandpaper on a piece of glass and straighten it. I was told I could do something similar with the top half using a flat file. There's a post on YouTube that indicates Maybe one could use two gaskets and silicone them together or just use a permatex sealant on both halves of the gasket but that would make future disassembly difficult, to say the least. What would be my best bet here?
Howie 899 #2 Posted July 9, 2019 I'm guessing it is the top that is warped. With the two legs sticking down that the float goes in that will be harder to deal with. At least it has for me. I personally do not like to use any type of sealer on the carb, Father-in-law used to use something called Seals-All clear stuff and when dry gas would not loosen it which some of the others it would not hold. Don't really have a good answer I guess.
WHNJ701 4,165 #3 Posted July 9, 2019 do you have a fuel shut off? yes they do have a tendency to warp over time I always check/sand them, sand it then spray it with black paint and sand again. you will see any imperfections. I wouldn't use sealer. my history with 2 part flo jets is you take them apart every other year
ZXT 2,401 #4 Posted July 9, 2019 I second (third?) the pieces being warped.. Definitely have at it with the glass and sand paper. Gas and RTV/silicone do not play well together. Gas will dissolve it in no time. I have yet to find a readily available epoxy that will withstand gasoline for even gas tank repair.
gwest_ca-(File Mod) 11,358 #5 Posted July 9, 2019 Who is the gentleman that did extensive work on repairing the breakerless Tecumseh magnetos? Seems to me he had a repair for the warped carbs. I can't remember his name or where I saw it but likely on his website. Garry Ed Stoller but this is different than I remember seeing. https://shop.stollerlawnandgarden.net/special-access-parts-tecumseh-610906-magneto-detail.htm?productid=-1001986
Howie 899 #6 Posted July 9, 2019 Mariñe-Tex epoxy is one that gasoline will not affect. I learned of it thru an individual who restores Quadrajet carbs. Have tried it and it works. But would not use it in this case. 1
