12 HP Hydro w/48" Deck = Bad idea?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone here was using a C120 or 312H with a 48" deck? I'm running a 42" SD on my 312H and it does fine, but im wondering if a 48" would be too much for a 12hp +hydro. The machine would be used somewhere where the grass would be pretty tall each time I mow.

I slow down in heavy grass even with 20HP just to get a better cut.

Really, the only thing that works a 20Hp engine is the 2 stage snow blower (I know we are talking 12HP here but just saying that 12 may be fine).

Just make sure somehow that your engine is not overheating if you work it too hard.

I have a 312 here that I picked up last year but have not mowed with it yet.

I have a 12 HP on a c-141. I changed it when I found that the unit ran but smoked, But it had a very nice 42" SD deck and snow blade all for $200.and very nice cosmetically.. While I was at it, i stole the seat and seat pan from the 520. It all bolts right up. What a sweet ride! Confusing --as this Frankenhorse is part of three tractors

Just cut the speed a bit for a super nice cut. That is what is nice about a hydro. Adjust the speed for a perfect cut. Sharp blades also equal "more" horsepower in cut equivalency.  You can cut just as much yard with the wider deck at 85% of the speed of the 42"

I never was a fan of the steering column mounted transmission control on the 520. I absolutely love the side mount control lever on the c-141.  Gonna spend the money for a rebuild on that 14 HP [runs but smokes] engine as it has an egg shaped combustion chamber.

953 nut

Heck, the 953 came with a 9.6 HP engine and the only deck offered was a 48",   no problem!
