My 314-8 won't shut off when I turn the key off.  Any suggestions?

You have a mag ignition. Either your switch has lost ground or the kill wire has broken off. Try fiddling with the switch mounting nut.

I have same issue with my Bronco 14.  Where is the kill wire?  I have to 'choke it out' to kill the engine...14hp Kohler

There should be 3 wires coming out from behind the engine end plate with a connector that then goes tot eh ignition switch and regulator.  Two will be identical color and are AC output for charging system.  The third wire is the mag ground/kill wire.

On a 314 should be a dark blue wire to the m terminal of the switch.

The switch might not have a good ground. On the 300 & 400 the dash plate might not have a good ground. If it been left out side the two 1/4" screws and the corners of the dash plate rust  causing a bad ground.

The rust can cause starting problems also, might have to try a couple of time to get it to turn over.

“The Polished Turd” 656 is the same way....  either find something to short the spark plug wire, or choke it out:handgestures-thumbupright:

Could be a corroded ignition switch terminal on the "M" terminal or on the engine connector plug. As mike said, the dark blue wire runs from the Magneto to the ignition switch and the switch needs to ground that wire to shut off the engine.
