Is it just me?

Over the past 35+ years I've messed with a lot of Kohler K engines, and many times one or more of the five bolts holding the flywheel blower cover are stripped or broken. Yesterday I started removing the covers off the 16 hp to clean it up and the bolt at the five o'clock position is broken off. That bolt seem to be the one that's stripped or broken most often, and the hardest to fix with out removing the engine.

It's it just me :scratchead:

when you are trying to remove any long standing bolt , lubrication and a 6 point socket  ,or a spring loaded impact socket tool will get it done. too often your frustration just makes it worse. i find a 6 point and a long leverage bar to let it going , lubricate it again , use you leverage to solve the issue, been their a couple of times. pete

It was broken off before I got it. Over the years I've learned to be very careful when removing and replacing these bolts.

I always find the bolt on the head that holds the rear tin work busted. Now I have found that lower bolt cross threaded but not broken! :banana-wrench:

I did snap off a stainless screw in a freezer door yesterday. Now that is a fun one to fix! :occasion-snowman:

I have found teh same thing the lower ones are most frequently broken missing.  I would guess it is because it hard to get them started and over time someone cross threaded them trying to put them in.

I think it might have a lot to do with the size of that particular thread - 1/4-20. Over the yrs I have heard this tossed around quite often, another, seemingly, weak thread size is 10-24. I've found I will snap the 1/4-20's more often than any other - especially on all the tin! When the thread is cut, it is so deep into the small dia of the shaft that it weakens it - Think about the 1/4-28 thread, they rarely break....

I see a lot of lower tins rusted out. It seems to me that water gets down inside the flywheel cover and rusts/corrodes the bolts in thier holes. Then them little boogers snap off. I have been pretty lucky I guess. Most of my engines I have gotten were an oily mess down inside. Bolts came right out. 😁

The problem with this one is you can't get to it with a drill without unbolting the engine and turning it a little on the frame. As usual that was not in my plan :angry-tappingfoot:
