wikket 0 #1 Posted April 10, 2009 What you guys think about this RJ 58? The guy told me first come first serve, leaving work early to go pick it up. hopefully it's still there..
kpinnc 10,768 #2 Posted April 10, 2009 Nice looking tractor, but it's NOT an RJ.... Looks like a 550 or 551 to me. Probably the latter, but at any rate, definitely a Suburban. Good luck! Kevin
wikket 0 #3 Posted April 10, 2009 Really, hmm, Thanks, the AD say RJ58 year?? Now I am debating to pick it up or pick up the parts tractor he have that have a good running 16hp Kohler. which one should I pick up.. :omg:
CasualObserver 3,406 #4 Posted April 10, 2009 Which to pick up is totally your call, but that cast iron front axle and hood with the embossed lines is definitely Suburban, not RJ. RJs had a square tube steel axle and only the name Wheel Horse emobssed in the hood... (no lines). The motor also looks to be a teccy from the picture which would push it to be either a 550 or 551. I can't tell what the hood stand or tranny look like and don't see a clutch pedal or footrests to tell the difference, maybe someone with better eyes could though. kpinnc 10,768 #5 Posted April 10, 2009 He prolly doesn't know what he has Wikket. It may be bargaining leverage for you, as mid-engine Suburbans were built in 1960 and 1961. RJs were 1955-1959, so it's age isn't quite as important in the price factor... If it has a "normal" looking Unidrive tranny (just like a newer WH) on it, it's definitely a 1961 model. Lots of folks associate ANY "nut roasters" (mid-mount engine) as RJs, so I wouldn't sweat it much. He's prolly not intentionally misleading folks. ol550 829 #6 Posted April 10, 2009 The deck in my limited knowledge is for a 1960 model making it a 550. The steering wheel I believe is off a early cub due to the curved spokes. Mike
64s 83 #7 Posted April 10, 2009 Wikket, My wife really wants a '60 model. If you are going to pass, please let me know and I'll go take a look. :omg:
kpinnc 10,768 #8 Posted April 10, 2009 The deck in my limited knowledge is for a 1960 model making it a 550. 1961 deck was just like that as well. Should have 4 rollers- 1 at each corner.
CasualObserver 3,406 #9 Posted April 10, 2009 the 1960 deck didn't have rollers... just skids. I think the 1961 deck only had two wheels one each on the outside of the front corners.

pond195520032003 27 #12 Posted April 11, 2009 I cant see it real well, but going by the rear lift- i believe its a 1960 550 ? the 61 suburban did have 4 wheels on the deck as i has a few i believe the steering wheel is off a bolens ride-a-matic or lawn keeper anyway too bad its all hacked up what was he asking for it :(
