Hole in intake tube - Walbro carb

Why is there a hole in the side of this updraft tube?  Wouldn't it defeat the purpose of the air filter?

Not 100% sure on the old Clinton engines but all the other engines I've worked on that had a hole like that between the air filter and carb. went to the breather box on the valves.  Check the little rectangular plate behind the bowl on the carb. and you might find a matching hole or a fitting of some kind.  Then again it is also somewhere around 50-60 years old and it's possible somebody put it there in the past for some reason.  I'm sure someone who knows a lot more about those engines will be along soon to help out.

You were right.  Now I just need to find a replacement tube to connect the two.
