SaintJay 9 #1 Posted June 29, 2019 Hi all, Was looking for some advice. I am in the middle of a project and my C-165 will start to sputter. If I close the choke it will run for a minute longer and then, either way, it will stall and I cannot restart for several hours. I have spark, so I am assuming fuel but nothing is changing during use. It starts great and runs strong. I was thinking maybe I need to adjust the carb for the heat & humidity but not sure. The fact that I can delay the stall by closing the choke leads me to believe it is starving for fuel. Any ideas welcome. On another note, we loved our first year at the show and meeting some of you. Definitely be there next year. John
JAinVA 4,638 #2 Posted June 29, 2019 Gas cap vent, clogged strainer in fuel tank shutoff or obstruction in fuel line.I would check all of those areas.
Lee1977 7,232 #3 Posted June 29, 2019 I would also suggest replacing the fuel line if it looks old. Most of us have changed to using non alcohol gas as it saves you from a lot of problems.
rmaynard 16,374 #4 Posted June 29, 2019 (edited) Try this. Start it, use it. When it starts to sputter, loosen the gas cap. If it returns to normal, you have a clogged vent in the cap. Edited June 29, 2019 by rmaynard Spelling
SaintJay 9 #5 Posted July 12, 2019 I have already switched to nonE gas. I will try the gas cap trick and see if it helps. A buddy of mine suggested vapor lock but I am not clear where or how this would occur. I am going up and down hilly terrain but not real steep. Thanks for the ideas. Jay If have been given the vapor lock scenario before too , I could be completely wrong, but I think one cause of vapor lock could be a blown or leaking head gasket. My experience with this in the past was having various tractors with Kohler engines, had same symptoms your describing, tractor would run great for about 10-15 minute, then just die, turned out to be blown headgasket, replaced that, no more issues. Also, as of recently, my dad's 702 with k161 engine, same thing, ran great 10-15 minutes, then dies, turns out had a very leaky head gasket, fixed that, runs like a kitten. I'm thinking once the engine warms up, the leaking of the head gasket somehow messes with the carb, causing it to die. Anyway, I'm no expert, but that has been my experience,
