High engine temp

hello,

I just purchased a used New Holland GT22A, Same as my 522xi. I can only cut grass for about twenty minutes before the temp gage gets to the red. When I shut it off and restart it half an hour later the gage was way past the red. See photo. Any suggestions?

Air cooled or water cooled?

 

The only things I know off the top of my head that make air-cooled engines run hot are low oil and lean fuel mix.

 

Although its also very possible your gauge or sensor are shot. Probably easiest to trace that wire back to the engine and make sure it isn't broken. An open circuit will peg a gauge like that to one end or the other, but usually the low side, a short to ground would peg it hot, but it does depend on the polarity of the sending unit.

Or maybe it is running hot from lack of cooling.

 

Have read where it is quite a chore to remove the tinwork on the air cooled models to clean the cooling fins. There is a kit from Kohler that adds clean-out covers to make life easier if it is a Kohler.

 

Water cooled? Must have a thermostat and are the rad fins clear?

 

A cheap hand-held laser thermometer would be handy in this case.

 

Tractor may be similar to one of these using Kohler CH22 air cooled.

The xi series do need periodic engine removal to pull the engine tins to clean the grass and debris from those Kohlers...also those sending units are notorious for failing and expensive to replace if you can find one...

According to the 2004 operator manual the gauge is an engine oil temperature gauge
