Starter Spins...

The starter on my C-81 just spins but the bendix gear does not move out to engage the flywheel. It worked fine two days ago but today - just spinning. I had a similar problem years ago but I think it was with the B-100, which is probably the same ,or close to it, starter. Should I be able to move it in and out by hand? Because I can't and I also can't remember what the other one did when it went. 

 

I'm sure I'll have to pull it but if there are any suggestions for something quick to check or do I would appreciate it. I did check all connections and they are good. The starter spins very fast it's just that the gear is not moving out on the shaft.

 The starter should be easy  to pull off. 

 I would clean the bendix real good and bench test . There may be lot of gunk 

build up.

Try using a long screwdriver to push the bendix down the shaft a few times. A spring should return it but might not. Could have a bit of dust holding it.

Standing on the right side you should see the back end on the bendix.

A bit of white lithium grease will do wonders. Get the bendix worked out with a screw driver, put some on the shaft and work it back and forth a few times and it should free up.

A spray graphite lube is what I use on them. The solvent evaporates almost immediately leaving the dry graphite for lubrication. Any wet lubricant will attract dust in the air and there is a ton of air off the fan when the engine is running.

Thanks gang...and it was just that easy. I had forgotten how the bendix actually twists out while it engages. I got it to move, by hand, and cleaned it, then greased it. Works like a charm!
