K181 after an hour or so chug/diesel and quits

After around an hour my k181 has this feeling like it's locking up it spits and sputtered then quits. Sometime if I can get the pto shut off and the idle down it will stay running but if I idle it back up it starts doing it again......let it cool down and I'm good to go for another hour, valve problem? I changed the coil

Did you change the coil before this issue or change it to try to fix the issue?

My reason for asking. If you have an automotive style coil and you put a coil on that does not have an internal resistor, you will get this type of issue.

I tried to fix it, the one I have in it now says on the side do not use external resistor....but I honestly believe if this isn't the right one the one that was in it had to be and it does exactly the same thing with both of them, thanks bud!

That should be the correct type of coil then. I think that my next step would be to try a new condenser.

Not a big deal to check valve clearance. Valves expand with heat and if the tappet clearance is too small they can expand enough to prevent the valve from closing 100%.

I don't think your valves are adjustable. They need to be removed and shortened to get the required clearance. If it comes to that clean the carbon off them as that will also reduce the clearance if it comes off after the repair.

Someone with experience will comment.

Yeah I'm thinking it is a valve problem also and no they are not adjustable. I hope cleaning the carbon off will be enough cause I've never shortened them before,  thank you much!

Like Garry the valves aren’t adjustable.

Check the clearance. If they aren’t in spec, pull the head and remove the valves.

The valve stem base needs to be ground with a machine designed to remove the required amount of material and it needs to be square.

I would recommend you take the block to a machine shop and have them resurface the valves, grind the valve seat and fit the valves properly. Depending on your area it shouldn’t cost much more then 50.00.

buy a new head gasket. Don’t use the old one and torque in the proper sequence.

Intake .006-.008

exhaust .017-.019
