Pops 18 #1 Posted June 13, 2019 (edited) I been looking for a engine to replace the engine on lawn ranger. Found one has electric start like mine. Here is my question owner took this off a tiller he said it starts fine using the electric start but has problems using rope starter. What I found strange the rope started pulls to front mine pulls to the rear. As you can tell I am not a mechanic, the only thing I can come with that tiller shaft runs backwards, Would the engine face in a reversed position on a tiller. The engine look identical to mine other then pull started facing the front. Edited June 13, 2019 by Pops Added info
SPINJIM 1,984 #2 Posted June 13, 2019 (edited) I've never heard of a Tecumseh that has a reverse rotation on the crank. As long as the recoil (rope) starter pulls to turn the flywheel side clockwise, it should be the same as your old engine. The recoil starter should be held on by four bolts, and can be removed and rotated to where the pull direction is appropriate for your machine. If it's not removable, you might want a different engine with the recoil handle in the right position. Good luck, Jim Edited June 13, 2019 by SPINJIM

Howie 899 #4 Posted June 14, 2019 Engine not turning a different direction, recoil is just clocked in another position because of mounting position on the tiller. Can be moved back like mentioned above.Maybe he could not turn it over fast enough with the recoil. We do that as we get older!
pfrederi 18,411 #5 Posted June 14, 2019 If it came from a TroyBilt tiller then there is also an output stub on the the camshaft. It turns the reverse of the main crank haft. (Tilers used it for reverse.) It may or may not interfere with your belt guard mounting....

You can order a shaft sleeve which comes with a key to slide on a 3/4 shaft to make it 1 inch so don't let that easy fix stop ya https://www.ebay.com/itm/3-4-to-1-Inch-w-Step-Key-Gas-Engine-Pulley-Crank-Shaft-Sleeve-Adapter-Predator/252429776568?hash=item3ac5fcb6b8:g:jh4AAOSwg65bza5a:sc:USPSFirstClass!01524!US!-
