Big haul: WH and motor

Recommended Posts

Mudrig150

So we were at an auction yesterday, and after losing 3 different things we wanted I thought we weren't coming home with anything. Then my brother decides to just buy me a walk behind with a briggs 8 hp, and a 414-8! It only sometimes turns over and the choke cable is stuck. It doesn't start either. Brother is taking the motor for his JD, and after I do that and pay him 50$ it's mine.

Nice tractor!! :handgestures-thumbupright: Too bad you don't have a 14hp Kohler to trade him for the complete tractor.

You can put a different engine in this tractor but you will need to make sure that the engine you choose has a thrust bearing on the crank if you want to run the stock PTO clutch or you will need to switch to an electric PTO clutch.

Thrust bearing on the crank? I didn't know they had thrust bearings.

Well he just wants the magnum 14 for uniqueness and the low power that the coil uses. I might add a twin cylinder or put my 14 horse in.

Wheel Horse spec'd the engines out to have a trust bearing on the PTO side when used with the friction type PTO clutch. When you engage the PTO it puts inward pressure on the crank thus a thrust bearing is required to keep from damaging the crank.

If you put an engine in without a thrust bearing on the PTO side then you will have to switch to an electric PTO clutch if you wish to use the PTO. Other wise you will take out the crank on the engine.

Magnum singles all had  ball bearings on the crank so they could handle end loading.  Magnum Twins did not have ball bearings and most Spec#s did NOT come with a trust bearing.  A very few variations have a thrust beairng (WH used them). You have to look up the specific spec number to see if it has a thrust bearing.

So we haven'd done much on the 414-8. We did modify the mounting plate to get rid of the busted magnum starter. Now we can fit a K series starter on and not have to deal with the crap that mounts those stupid starters on. Just need to mount the starter that my brother broke and I fixed. 30 seconds on the motor and he had already ruined the brush and brush cap on the dang thing!!!

So we tried to start the 414-8, but it didn't go so well. The starter locked up and something is wrong with the carb. The gravity fed tank works a lot better then the busted fuel pump which won't even pump out drops of fuel. Guess I'll have to pull the diptsick again to retrieve the busted starter.
