Grumpywildman1973 31 #1 Posted June 11, 2019 Good morning. So u have a 67 ranger with 6hp Tecumseh. I want to update the wiring and have a alternator/generator so that I can run lights. It already had battery etc for the electric start. What will I need? Thank you
ebinmaine 72,718 #2 Posted June 11, 2019 Was the tractor originally built as a pull start or electric start? if it already had a battery and electric start from the factory you should be able to run a couple of LED lights off of that system but maybe not incandescent.
Achto 29,405 #3 Posted June 11, 2019 If the tractor came with electric start, it should already have a charging system. Run a fused wire from the battery + to a switch then to your lights. Should be all that is needed.
Grumpywildman1973 31 #4 Posted June 11, 2019 Yes electric start from the factory. Want to. run something like motorcycle head lights....
Grumpywildman1973 31 #5 Posted June 11, 2019 Ok because I do not see a generator on it. The only thing I see is a small wiring block with fuses.
ebinmaine 72,718 #6 Posted June 11, 2019 one of the other fellows can maybe get you the right wiring diagram but those two lower items which are vertical are not fuses. I made that same mistake a couple years ago. They are diodes. Each one lets 1.5 amps get through to the battery.
Grumpywildman1973 31 #7 Posted June 11, 2019 Ok. I wondered. I found a wiring diagram. It showed a optional rectifier it looked like? Have not had a plethora of time to review everything yet.... Thank you
pfrederi 18,689 #8 Posted June 11, 2019 That panel is a rectifier. As Eric said the tubular things are diodes not fuses. Max output is 3 amps. You will; be limited to LED lighting unless you want to drain your battery. 3 amps = 36 watts
Grumpywildman1973 31 #9 Posted June 11, 2019 Hmm. Ok... Lol... I am learning.. If I want more... Is there a way to add a generator? Out of curiosity...
Grumpywildman1973 31 #10 Posted June 11, 2019 I would like to use something like these....
pfrederi 18,689 #11 Posted June 11, 2019 (edited) 14 watt draw for two lights you should be OK. If you want more output you would have to look at swapping out the fly wheel and stator for the type they used on snow blowers. They have an AC out put but it varies with engine speed and your lights would only work when running. Since LEDs want DC you would have to put in a diode. oliver2-44 10,734 #12 Posted June 11, 2019 Take your time and learn that Tecky electrical system before you modify it. Parts for it are getting very difficult to find and your probable looking at buying used parts if you can find them. I'm not knowledgeable in them, but I've seen a few threads where parts got fried, then questions asked later to learn about them. Its your horse, so make it special to you, but proceed with knowledge in hand.
Grumpywildman1973 31 #13 Posted June 11, 2019 Absolutely. Thank you. That's why I'm asking questions now.
953 nut 60,071 #14 Posted June 12, 2019 The lights you are looking at are only 7 watts each, that will only be a little over one amp draw and you have a 3 amp system so you will be fine!
