D160 engine problem

Recommended Posts

Jesse Rieber

I bought a D160.  The engine starts fine when fully choked.  After it warms up a bit I try to ease off the choke and it stalls.  Eventually, I can bring the choke all the way down.  When I run the throttle full up it is reving fine, but then suddenly will slow and may stall.  I have observed the arm to the carb that activates the throttle.  When I put the throttle full ahead it seems to automatically back off and the engine revs drop.  Anyone have any ideas about this?

D 160s came with 2 different engines over time. A Kohler single K341 or later an Onan Twin.  Need to know which you have as some of us work with Kohlers some with Onans some with both.  I know nada about Onans

Onans are notoriously 'finicky' when tuning. Since this is a new-to-you tractor/engine I would do a thorough fuel delivery cleaning - get rid of old gas, replace fuel lines/filters, check fuel pump, and very likely would need a carb cleaning and kit - ethanol fuel can really gum up everything.

As for the throttle backing off, the lever operates on a friction basis - look under the dash and see if you can spot a nut that the lever pivots on, this may need a slight tightening.

These "Big D's" are an awsome tractor!!

Thanks.  I did notice there is a triangular piece which is the connection between the dash throttle and the spring/arm mechanism and that the bolt on which the triangular piece swivels is loose.  I'll give that a try
