Fixing pesky throttle creep?

Recommended Posts

TC10284

What is the best way to more permantly fix throttle creep on a 400/500 series WH tractor with Onan engines?

I have a few 520s, a 518, and 416s where the throttle likes to creep back down and I'm looking for a more permanent fix without having to replace the cable on every one.

There is a rivet that the throttle lever pivots on that over time loosens up and loses its grip. Clamp down on the rivet with a pair of vise grips and that should fix your issue. If that doesn't work, you might have to replace the rivet with a bolt and nut.

Had the same issue on my Sears with an Onan.

Remove the throttle cable from the dash, then use a 1/4" drill bit and drill out the old rivet which is the pivot for the throttle lever, install a 1/4-20 bolt (3/4"-1" length ok as I recall) with a lock nut, tighten it down so you can still move the throttle lever without a lot of work but not so loose that it creeps down. The crimp method works for a while and if you're in a hurry it definitely will work but the bolt and lock nut method is the best way to go if you plan on keeping the tractor and using it.

I use a bolt that has enough unthreaded shaft to go through the bracket and lever plus a bit and cut off the extra thread. You do not know if the bolt will pivot with the lever or the bracket but you do not want either turning on threads. That will wear the hole bigger. Add some SAE flat washers under the Nylock nut so it will tighten the assembly. Required bolt is likely at least 1-1/2" long.
