clueless 3,248 #1 Posted June 9, 2019 Thoughts on pre air filters on kohlers. Back in the day kohler didn't have them, I've heard two different sides, yes, and no. Not trying to start anything, just curious.
wallfish 18,127 #2 Posted June 9, 2019 I use them. Collects the larger particles and it's real easy to clean keeping the paper filter cleaner. What are the negatives you heard?
kick 72 #3 Posted June 9, 2019 Grab yourself a can of pj1 foam filter oil (motorcycle product) and keep a light coat on them. You will be amazed what it will trap. Your main filter won’t work that hard.
953 nut 60,072 #4 Posted June 9, 2019 (edited) I use them on my mower tractor, once every three or four mowings I take it off and wash it with soap and water then next day when it is dry I put a little motor oil on it and squish it all around and wrap it up in a clean rag. Next time I mow I put it on again. You would be amazed how much fine dirt it catches. Edited June 9, 2019 by 953 nut
lynnmor 7,824 #5 Posted June 9, 2019 They do make the paper filter last a lot longer. One thing to watch for is that the paper filter might look pretty good but be plugged with the very fine dust that got thru the pre-filter. I had my air filter light come on and the filter looked OK, but checking it with a light inside and comparing it with a new one, it was night and day different.

8ntruck 7,842 #7 Posted June 10, 2019 I was going to start a similar thread. Glad to see that you did it. I was guessing that the pre filter would grab the larger crud, probably making the main filter last longer.
ET160 30 #8 Posted June 11, 2019 Where do you get them?

I don't know about for the smaller engines but for the 12 and 16 horse you can order them on the fleabay or from small engine dealers as a kit package with the foam and the air filter. The Tuul Crib 7,339 #10 Posted June 11, 2019 I use mine for the same reason to make the main filter last longer. They are there for a reason.
