wallfish 18,127 #2 Posted June 9, 2019 9 out 10 times it's a dirty carb or extra air leaking in. If you can calm down the surging down by slowly closing the choke, the problem is air to fuel mixture in or around the carb. The common possibilities are a dirty carb or extra air leaking around the throttle shaft and or gasket or all of them. The choke closing is limiting the intake of of air and therefore matching the amount of air to the fuel. 4 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
953 nut 60,073 #3 Posted June 9, 2019 First question, have you been using gas that has ethanol in it? If so then stop! Go to this site to find the real thing. https://www.pure-gas.org/ Use some spray carburetor cleaner and spray it around the throttle shaft to see if the surging stops. If it stops you need to add a bushing to the shaft. Buy some "Sea Foam" gas additive and add it to your fuel and add it to your ethanol free gas at double the recommended rate for a couple tank fulls. To locate the air leak, with the engine running, spray carb cleaner around the areas John mentioned above.
