Lawn Ranger Won't Shut Off

Recommended Posts

68Ranger

I have a 1968 Lawn Ranger with a H60 Tecumseh and electric start. I installed a new 3 tab ignition switch and followed the wiring diagram.

It starts fine and runs great but will not shut off with the key. I have to pull the plug wire.

This motor has magneto ignition which is self powered. The ignition wire just grounds the ignition to shut it OFF.

Whatever you do do not allow any battery voltage into that ignition wire.

Suspect the body of the ignition switch in not grounded to the battery negative post. Paint, rust and old age can disrupt the metal to metal contact back to the battery negative. Try a jumper from the negative battery ground cable to the body of the switch to see if it will shut off to verify that is what is happening.

If it still won't shut off the ignition wire going to the points from the switch has a break in it somewhere.

Here is a wiring diagram. Click on the picture and again on the next page.

:WRS:

The "M" tab on your ignition switch should go to ground with the key in the "Off" position. Test the switch with a multi meter to be sure this is happening.
