ET160 30 #1 Posted May 30, 2019 I have a 1975 B80 with the original K181s. It smokes a little at start up and ticks a little, but is otherwise fine. I'd like to rebuild it sometime. Is there risk to waiting, or is just a mater of more oil consumption?
ebinmaine 72,740 #2 Posted May 30, 2019 My concern would probably not be with oil consumption but with the ticking. that could be different things. Loose valves. Bad timing. I'm going to follow along and see what the others say....
WHX?? 51,784 #3 Posted May 30, 2019 I like to get at them sooner rather than later. I always worry about an unruly rod ventilating the block but then with other projects and horse illnesses I usually procrastinate and just keep a close eye on the oil. The tick might be just a worn tappet. Most often if you can go through them earlier the better on your wallet. If the motor has been loved in the past with regular oil changes and cooling fins kept clean just a re-ring or at worst a 10 over piston & rings may be required.
oliver2-44 10,735 #4 Posted May 30, 2019 Can you give us a little more history of the tractor, and maybe some pictures to see it condition as to how its been maintained. how long have you owned it and is thw smoking and tick a new thing, or been doing it a long time. pfrederi 18,690 #5 Posted May 30, 2019 Ticking could be valves. K181s do not have adjustable valves. you grind then if they are too tight and replace if they are too loose. Wonder if at some point in the past 44 year some one tried to adjust the valves by grinding and got carried away??? It doesn't take too much to make a tick...do not ask me how I know that.

Did we get a little bit ambitious on a grinding wheel at some point Paul?

troutbum70 858 #9 Posted May 31, 2019 I know this is a long shot, but my dad had a 14 horse years ago that developed a tick tick tick that did increase with rpm until you opened it wide open then it could not be heard like it went away. Anyway it turned out to be a tiny exhaust leak in a tiny crack in the pipe nipple where it screwed into the head. Worth looking for a little exhaust trail maybe. ET160 30 #10 Posted May 31, 2019 The tractor has been in the family since new. It's been maintained well. I assume the ticking is valves, but I'll look for an exhaust leak.
