Dominator 68 #1 Posted May 28, 2019 Hello all, wondering about the main differences between a Kohler cast iron 14 and the newer magnum 14. Is one better than the other and it what way? I have read that the magnum benefits from changing the walbro carb. Just trying to make some sense, any help is greatly appreciated,. Thank you dominator
JAinVA 4,637 #2 Posted May 28, 2019 (edited) Without addressing the carburetor issue the main difference between the two engines is the ignition system. The K series uses points, coil and condenser. The Magnum series use an electronic ignition featuring an ignition module and a magnet attached to the flywheel to trigger it.The fly wheels are different but the mounting tapers are the same for horizontals. There is also a diiference in the block area between the two where the aluminum side cover is attached. The M is a more modern iteration of the K but the basic architecture and ruggedness are the same. oldredrider 2,553 #3 Posted May 28, 2019 Starter and mounting are different too.
JAinVA 4,637 #4 Posted May 28, 2019 (edited) Paul is correct.I missed that! That can be an important issue. The K has 2 bolts holding the starter in place. Two bolts out and off comes the starter. On the M you have to remove the oil fill tube to remove the starter. If they are running well there is no need to replace the Walbro. The biggest thing you can do for any small engine is change the oil and avoid gas with Ethanol. JAinVA 4,637 #6 Posted May 28, 2019 I am in total agreement with 953 nut's suggestions. These air cooled singles have no oil filter.Oil is cheaper than hard parts!
